Lovely shots Andy if you don't mind me saying a little off centre

thanks Paul,

re the off centering, I have been doing that a bit lately - leaving a bit more space in front of the aircraft supposedly to give it 'space to fly into' something I read on the Canon fodder forum a while back. Not sure if it works but you are the first to comment on it. I prefer it to really tight cropping but maybe more space but centred is a better method.

Fabulous aircraft Andy, you must have had a really enjoyable morning. I don't get the space to fly into thing either though, sorry!

thanks Nick - looks like it's time to dump that approach! It was a very good morning , a turkmenistan helicopter departed as well but didn't get a pic of it as we were at Broxted and it took off south, saw it in the distance though.

I don't see the "off centre" in the pictures.

And yes, sometimes there is a case to be made for allowing space and room for the 'plane to fly into'. Looking at some of these photo websites, you know these dedicated photo websites where your photo needs to pass a screening process by 'Screeners', I do sometimes wonder how closely cropped and photoshopped to death images make the grade.

Then again, photography is a broad church and there's room for all. The boredom of looking at all squeaky clean and laboratory perfect shots is to be avoided.

thanks for more feedback, they are a bit off centre and intentionally so, here are 3 screenshots of them as cropped with the grid overlaid (which I always do) to show the variation in spacing between the front and rear ends of the aircraft, I don't have a massive difference. I do tend to use the fuselage ends as the basis of the spacing rather than tailplanes etc as having equal space around the latter does tend to unbalance the photo (in my opinion at least). The LH MD.11 in particular has produced the reverse effect a bit though probably because the engine pod and tail are rather meaty items - one reason why the 'tripods' look so impressive I suppose.

Anyway there's a topic to discuss, any more feedback most welcome - I'm all for discussing and learning!

Nice, clean shots Andy.

I quite like the shots when they show a little more sky around the aircraft, rather than being cropped to within a millimetre of the nose / tail / wings - sometimes it adds to the image.

Then again, I don't always adhere to the "rule of thirds" thing!! (must have been a rebel in a previous life!!)

Personally I prefer the "room to fly into" approach to the image composition - I find it more pleasing on the eye, and gives a sense of movement when that cannot be generated by panning. Love those JASDF 747's. Always enjoy your posts Andy - I only live 5 mins from the airport, but with work etc. rarely get the chance to catch these really nice visitors. Can I ask - how do you find out what's coming in - or are you just lucky?

I'm a member of the Stansted Yahoo group where the expected arrivals are usually posted, I also hear a few fairly reliable rumours from Air Britain members especially at the meetings although some of them tend to post on the Stanted yahoo group anyway and I look at FR24 and ADSB-exchange with a Stansted only filter on to see what I can pick out between the Ryanairs flights!
here's a link to the Stansted yahoo group if you're not a member: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/sta ... s/messages
