Oil Rig Rescue

Post by JezM » Fri Feb 28, 2025 7:43 pm

G-ATBY Westland Wessex 60 operated by Bristow Helicopters is seen here at the Grandes Rocques headland on the West coast of Guernsey in 1974. The machine was used to ferry equipment to the oil rig 'Orion' that was washed ashore after it's tow lines snapped whilst en-route from Rotterdam to Brazil - it was refloated 27 days later.
I've added images of the rig for context. Images are from a friends collection recently passed to me.

That's interesting to see the old Bristow colours.
Thanks.

Pete.
