More Moscow 1964 pics

Post by peewit » Sat Apr 28, 2012 6:16 am

Here are some more of my photos
Sorry about the dubious quality of some but bear in mind they are quite old and the camera was not great. Photography in those days was about taking snaps and then waiting a number of weeks to see if your rather expensive slides were any good. As such the photographer did not get much practice.

Excellent shots!! The last picture shows the rear half of an Ilyushin IL-18, a Tupolev Tu-114 and a number of Antonov An-10 which, despite their similarity to the An-12, were passenger aircraft. It was a development of the twin engined An-8 and suffered a number of fatal accidents and was retired from Aeroflot service in 1972. Love the 104 shots, only ever saw one in service at Heathrow back in 1973!

Many thanks Andrew for the heads up on some of the aircraft.

It was a strange trip where on some occasions there was no problem in taking photos, yet on actually flying as a passenger on the TU-104 and arriving at Moscow, taking photos of the airport could result in being sent to a Gulag. So those wide field shots were what would be described as "grab shots" these days.

The shot above with no less than 10 Ilyushin Il-18's visible in the pic also features what appears to be 2 Tupolev Tu-124. I don't think they are 104's as I don't think any 104's wore that scheme. I could be totally wrong though!

Great set of pictures. We used to see the Aeroflot 104's coming over Southend to and from Gatwick every day in the early to mid seventies. We always knew when one was coming because of the distinctive wailing noise that preceded it. Back then, planes had character, they actually looked and sounded different.
Thanks again for posting such a wonderful set of pictures from what was then, a very foreign place.
